Giving Birth in Jail Often Comes With Medical Neglect, Texas Jail Project Finds

This piece was published in coordination with Zealous, an organization working to amplify the perspective of public defenders. This op-ed discusses the trauma of giving birth in jail.

Amy Growcock was incarcerated in Harris county jail from Aug 19 to Aug 31, 2022 for a failure to submit a urine analysis on time. She is going to school to be a licensed drug counselor (LCDC) in order to help others and prevent them from going through what she had to go through in life. Krish Gundu is co-founder and executive director of Texas Jail Project, a non-profit advocacy group founded in 2006.
